Homework

At Kilburn Park we believe that homework plays an important role in pupils learning but we also recognise that some families may find it hard to complete for various reasons.  It is our aim to encourage pupils to complete their homework through positive motivation and active celebration strategies.  There will be time in the school week for those pupils who struggle to complete their homework at home during a weekly lunchtime club supported by a teaching assistant.

Reading books will be changed during the week on a rota, so please ensure that your child’s book is in school every day.  Each pupil will have a banded book that they need to read each week and a free choice book that can be read to them by a parent of a family member.  This book is purely for enjoyment.

Homework is due every Wednesday.

Pupils are expected to read for 15 minutes at least 3 times per week. We recommend that Year 3 and Year 4 pupils read aloud to an adult or older sibling at least 1 time per week where possible to support their development their reading fluency and expression.

For the fourth session pupils can choose 1 of the Reading Journal activities to complete each week.  This will have to be completed by Friday as pupils will have a chance to share their pieces of work with their peers during the reading session.

Please see the attached Reading Activity Sheet.

Handwriting

All pupils are expected to complete 1 piece of handwriting practice each week.  This is to develop writing fluency and stamina.  Pupils need to complete their activity in their CGP Targeted practice book.

As the school is currently having a great push on handwriting year 5 and 6 pupils will have to complete a weekly handwriting activity as well to improve the whole school drive for pupils to achieve a ‘Pen licence’.  Once a pupil has achieved this reward and their handwriting is consistently fluent and neat this piece of homework will no longer be required.

Caveat

In addition to the standard format where the teacher feels there are areas of need, children may be provided with one extra piece of homework.  These could be:

  • ‘Same Day’ consolidation tasks which support the learning that has taken place in school that day; this is designed

                to increase confidence and accuracy in preparation for the following lesson;

                this could be for any lesson.

  • Sentence work e.g. writing subordinate clause sentences which include accurate punctuation.
  • Reading comprehension tasks.
  • A research project around a particular topic in order to support children’s writing in class.
  • Packs of work to aid revision at specific times of year
  • Phonics packs, Y2 booster pack, Y6 booster packs
